Fried chicken is easily one of our favorite dishes. Our excitement comes as no surprise as we enter DeeLuxe Chicken. This family friendly eatery is located just a few blocks north of Duke University in Durham, perfect for a quick bite to eat and enjoy a house made margerita.

Walking in we are met with an informal fast-casual layout, with an order counter, short bar and a handful of varying size tables, which can easily be rearranged to fit a larger group. After ordering at the counter the attentive staff quickly bring out the warm baskets of food.

As per its name, the eatery is most well known for its tender chicken wrapped in a fried breading proving the perfect crunch factor. They also offer juicy hamburger creations, including the smoked gouda and charred jalapeño mayo topped Spicy Smokehouse Burger.

There are seafood baskets overflowing with shrimp, oysters, or catfish and several vegetarian options featuring grilled portobello mushrooms.

Each basket comes with a buttery piece of Texas Toast and your choice of one side item, including chili beans, hearty mac n’ cheese or the more classic crinkle cut fries. Since the sandwich and burger already are on bread, they just come with a side of your choice.

For those looking something a little less fried, they also have a delicious range of salad options beyond a simple house salad. We had the South of the Border Salad, with a unique blend of flavors from the sweet oranges and strong crumbled Cotija Cheese.

The salads all come as vegetarian by default, but you can add your choice of fried chicken or seafood for an additional surcharge.

It is all about picking the right sauce at DeeLuxe Chicken. The self-serve sauce bar features 12 housemade creations with a range of flavors and spice level. Our favorite hands down is the Spicy Blue Ranch, but there is no reason not to try them all!

Pricing: Basket entrees range from $6.49 to $19.95. Salads start from $6 to $8 with the option to add meat with a surcharge.
